Traditionally in India, Hindus are cremated along the Ganges River as part of a month-long series of funeral rites intended to purify and prepare the soul to move out of the body and assist it in moving toward spiritual liberation. However, it is far too common that families cannot afford a full cremation, so bodies are only partially burned before being submerged in the river’s waters.

Over the decades, there have been many different proposed solutions to this problem of so-called “corpse pollution,” some more far fetched than others. In the 1980s, the Indian government proposed a plan to release flesh-eating soft shell turtles into the Ganges, which used to be plentiful before they were hunted to near extinction. It spent over $30 million dollars to breed 25,000 turtles on a farm near Lucknow, but the plan never came to fruition. Probably for the best.

This Thanksgiving, we thought it would be appropriate to highlight recent pushes to return Native American remains to their ancestral homes.

In 1990, when Congress passed a law (NAGPRA) that set criteria under which Native American tribes could reclaim burial remains and sacred objects, legislators hoped it would encourage the return of items by museums, universities, and government agencies. However, that has not been the case. As of today, the remains of more than 116,000 Native American ancestors are still held by institutions around the country.

To make matters worse, some institutions have yet to *even* inventory all the human remains and burial objects in their care as mandated by the law. The original deadline to complete the inventories was 1995.

Seeking to address these harms, the Biden administration is seeking to make regulatory adjustments that would help expedite repatriation proceedings and require museums to identify who is in their collections. We sincerely hope that these changes come to fruition and that these people eventually make their way back to where they belong. 💔
