SUMMARY:Reclaiming Death - Art | Ritual | Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Ma’s House is pleased to present Reclaiming Death — Art | Ritual | Advocacy\, a group exhibition featuring 20 artists expressing personal and cultural connections to end-of-life practices. The exhibition will run from Sunday\, February 22—Sunday\, May 16\, 2026. \nDeath is one of life’s few universal experiences. As long as people are born\, people will die. And as long as people have died\, artists have played an integral role in creating cultural death practices. Our collective relationship to death and dying is inextricably tied to our humanity and mending that relationship directly impacts all we experience in life. “Reclaiming Death” is an ongoing pursuit of this mending which requires the communal effort of every participating artist and their unique approach to deathwork. \nNow in its 2nd iteration\, “Reclaiming Death” began as a research project by artist\, death doula\, and Ma’s House Director of Curation\, Brianna L. Hernández as part of Hyperallergic’s Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curators. The series of online articles grew into an in-person exhibition at Ma’s House in 2024\, and most recently hosted an open call for the 2nd show and a printed publication\, available online and in-gallery.

SUMMARY:Dead Parents Club
DESCRIPTION:Losing a parent changes you. It’s weird\, it’s heavy\, it’s lonely. Dead Parents Club is a grief circle for anyone navigating life after the loss of a parent (or parents). This is a space where the whole of you and your grief are welcome\, however it shows up. \nWe begin with a short grounding to connect with your body and breath\, and then the circle is open. The rest of the 90 minutes are yours: to share\, to listen\, to cry\, to sit in silence. Whatever you need. There’s no pressure to speak\, and no need to perform your grief in any particular way. This space is about showing up as you are. Whether your loss is new or decades old\, whether you’re feeling raw\, numb\, angry\, relieved\, or all of it at once\, you’re welcome here. Though if your grief is still very fresh and raw\, know that this isn’t a support group in the clinical sense. \nRSVP required\, spots are limited. SUMMARY:Book Club Author Kelly Cervantes discusses her book The Luckiest with Befriending Death
DESCRIPTION:The Luckiest by Kelly Cervantes (with the author) on Wednesday February 25th 5:00 – 6:30 PM (PT) 8-9:30 (ET)\nWe are so looking forward to the return of Kelly who spoke to our book club last year with Normal Broken\, describing her journey raising and losing her daughter to a neurodegenerative disorder and epilepsy. \nHere’s a description of The Luckiest:\nWhen moving from a conservative Midwestern suburb to New York City to pursue an acting career\, Kelly Cervantes never could have imagined what life had in store for her—or how much she would fundamentally change along the way. The Luckiest is her emotional journey through the pain of unrealized dreams\, navigating her husband’s Broadway spotlight\, fighting for her child’s life\, finding purpose after loss\, and rebuilding her life and marriage. \nInspired by author and poet Maggie Smith’s quote\, “We are all nesting dolls\, carrying the earlier iterations of ourselves inside\,” Kelly shares the many layers that have shaped who she is today. But how many of those layers were shaped through the control she desperately sought versus the luck she struggled to accept? Are we lucky if we escape life with soft skin and minimal layers? Or are we lucky to have the battle scars that show a life of survival—of fullness and meaning? \nThe Luckiest is a tale of motherhood in all its heartbreak\, joy\, fits\, and false starts. It follows Kelly’s wildly unpredictable journey and the role luck has played in her life\, both good and bad. It is one woman’s beautiful\, complicated\, and ongoing quest for self-discovery.
