SUMMARY:Book Club: What The Dead Know by Barbara Butcher
DESCRIPTION:What The Dead Know by Barbara Butcher Wednesday April 1st 5:00 – 6:00 PM (PT) 8-9 PM (ET) \nAbout the book:\nA “remarkably candid and sensitive” (The Wall Street Journal) true crime memoir from Barbara Butcher\, a trailblazing New York City death investigator\, who reveals the untold stories behind more than 5\,500 death scenes\, including the nation’s most horrific tragedy: the 9/11 attacks. \nWhen Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism\, she found an unexpected lifeline in a job at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in NYC. As only the second woman ever hired for the role—and the first to last more than three months—she became a vital force in the world of forensic science and criminal investigations. \nOver the next two decades\, Butcher worked thousands of cases: gruesome homicides\, suspicious suicides\, heartbreaking scenes involving underage victims\, and complex mass casualty investigations. In her unforgettable account\, she invites readers into the gritty\, high-stakes world of crime-scene investigation\, from the autopsy room and morgue to tense moments at active crime scenes. Along the way\, she uncovered how confronting death every day gave her a new perspective on life—and ultimately saved her from becoming a statistic herself. \nIn vivid\, darkly humorous prose\, Butcher recounts how she narrowly avoided a boobytrapped suicide scene\, and how\, during 9/11\, she and her colleagues worked tirelessly to identify victims using scraps of clothing\, DNA\, and the memories of grieving loved ones. Her honesty\, resilience\, and sharp wit make this a standout in the genre of first responder memoirs and women in law enforcement.

SUMMARY:Book Club Author Kelly Cervantes discusses her book The Luckiest with Befriending Death
DESCRIPTION:The Luckiest by Kelly Cervantes (with the author) on Wednesday February 25th 5:00 – 6:30 PM (PT) 8-9:30 (ET)\nWe are so looking forward to the return of Kelly who spoke to our book club last year with Normal Broken\, describing her journey raising and losing her daughter to a neurodegenerative disorder and epilepsy. \nHere’s a description of The Luckiest:\nWhen moving from a conservative Midwestern suburb to New York City to pursue an acting career\, Kelly Cervantes never could have imagined what life had in store for her—or how much she would fundamentally change along the way. The Luckiest is her emotional journey through the pain of unrealized dreams\, navigating her husband’s Broadway spotlight\, fighting for her child’s life\, finding purpose after loss\, and rebuilding her life and marriage. \nInspired by author and poet Maggie Smith’s quote\, “We are all nesting dolls\, carrying the earlier iterations of ourselves inside\,” Kelly shares the many layers that have shaped who she is today. But how many of those layers were shaped through the control she desperately sought versus the luck she struggled to accept? Are we lucky if we escape life with soft skin and minimal layers? Or are we lucky to have the battle scars that show a life of survival—of fullness and meaning? \nThe Luckiest is a tale of motherhood in all its heartbreak\, joy\, fits\, and false starts. It follows Kelly’s wildly unpredictable journey and the role luck has played in her life\, both good and bad. It is one woman’s beautiful\, complicated\, and ongoing quest for self-discovery.

SUMMARY:Death Medicine: An Open Mic Community Exploration of Death & Grief
DESCRIPTION:A monthly open mic event with a theme of death and grief is happening in both Sonoma and Marin counties of California. Occurring in San Rafael and Sebastopol\, these events have been beautifully received. \nBring your songs\, poetry\, stories\, dance or any other expression your heart feels called to offer around the topics of death and grief. \nThe event will be an open mic format where people can sing\, dance\, recite poetry\, or speak extemporaneously about their experiences of death and grief and be witnessed and heard by a radically present and loving audience in a well-held container. \nThere are no rules other than a share cannot last longer than five minutes. You need not perform to attend. The witnessing is at least as important as the sharing. \nWe imagine it as a community grief ritual. Sometimes a couple hours of cathartic release and tender listening and holding can do more to heal than years on a therapist’s couch.

SUMMARY:Community Death Care Zine Workshop & Exchange
DESCRIPTION:A two hour workshop on creating resources for death-positive artists & EOL doulas in the form of Risograph printed zines.\nIs there a community death care or grief resource you really wish existed\, but doesn’t yet? Do you have specialized knowledge\, experiences\, or ideas that would help others move through loss and grief? \nZines\, accessible pocket-sized DIY publications\, are a great way to share ideas\, stories\, and information; whether you’re a practicing death doula\, grief tender\, or just starting to learn about death\, grief\, and loss this workshop will benefit you. \nThere will be a brief intro to zines and the Risograph printing process\, we’ll use generative prompts to refine zine ideas and go over basic file set up. Each participant will create their own one or two-color\, one-page zine design (11×17 or 8.5×11)\, which will be printed by me in my home studio. You will receive 25-50 copies of your own zine\, as well as 1 copy of all of the other zines created in the class. One week after the initial workshop there will be an optional LIVE PRINTING over zoom if you’d like to see more of the process and get a preview of your prints before they are sent to you via USPS. \nIf you’re completely new to Riso and want to know what you’re signing up for\, here are some examples. In short\, Riso printing is very similar to screen printing\, but the machine looks like your average copy machine. It has a really fun\, vibrant aesthetic and it’s environmentally friendly\, as it uses soy based ink\, rice paper for the stencils and no heat in the printing process. \nClass fee covers instruction\, printing time\, supplies\, and shipping costs.

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop: Reading\, Writing\, & Dancing with Death
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Death Collective & Darien Public Library welcome Amy Shea\, essayist and author of Too Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins (Rutgers University Press\, 2025). Inspired by the classic imagery of the dance with death (a memento mori) —artworks that depict skeletons leading people from every station of life into the grave—Amy will guide participants through writing prompts and exercises that open space for reflection and creativity. Attendees will generate their own short pieces of poetry or prose in response to the images\, using writing as a way to explore inequities in death and dying\, and to consider how art can help us give language to the unspoken. \nBooks for sale by Barrett Bookstore! \nPlus\, we’re collecting sock donations for Open Doors\, Norwalk!

SUMMARY:Art as a Mirror: Exploring Grief at the Met Museum
DESCRIPTION:Throughout human history\, art has played an important role in the ways that we memorialize loved ones in death and express our grief. Join us at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a meaningful exploration of how art can illuminate and validate our personal experiences with loss. Led by creative grief professional\, Melanie Wilson\, and arts educator\, Deborah Chi\, this intimate group gathering will invite participants to view and discuss several carefully selected works of art that speak to different aspects of the mourning process. Through reflective exercises and thoughtful conversation\, participants will have the opportunity to explore their own grief and feelings around dying\, using art as a catalyst for deeper understanding. This engaging experience encourages processing and dialogue as we reflect on how these artistic expressions might resonate with our own journeys through grief\, creating space for both individual contemplation and shared understanding.\nPlease note: This is an interactive experience where participants are invited to share thoughts and feelings. We understand that some people prefer to process quietly while others find healing through verbal expression—both approaches are welcome and honored in our group.\nThis tour is available in English only\, and will require some mobility as we will be touring across two floors of the museum.\nGroup is limited to 15 people. Ticket purchase includes the tour and general admission to the museum.\nThis event is presented by Life and Soul as part of our Death of the Party event series.

SUMMARY:Book Launch - Oakland\, CA - Too Poor to Die
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday\, September 16\, 2025 at 7:00 PM as we welcome author Amy Shea for a conversation about her new book\, Too Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins. \nWe will be selling the book at the event\, or you can order a copy at https://ggpbooks.com/book/9781978843981. \nWe hope to see you there! \nDescription\nDeath is the great equalizer\, but not all deaths are created equal. \nToo Poor to Die: The Hidden Realities of Dying in the Margins\, a collection of closely connected essays\, takes the reader on a journey into what happens to those who die while experiencing homelessness or who end up indigent or unclaimed at the end of life. Too Poor to Die bears witness to the disparities in death and dying faced by some of society’s most vulnerable and marginalized and asks the reader to consider their own end-of-life and disposition plans within the larger context of how privilege and access plays a role in what we want versus what we get in death.

SUMMARY:Ready To Die? – A Comedy Show About End-of-Life Planning
DESCRIPTION:Writer & comedian Alison Zeidman is only in her 30s\, but already she has one Emmy nomination\, one Writer’s Guild Award\, and not just one but TWO dead parents. Impressive! \nAlison’s dad died due to complications stemming from Multiple Myeloma in 2014 when he was just 55\, and her mom was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at age 58. Frankly\, looking at that family history\, she does not like her odds for longevity — she needs to start getting her affairs in order\, and so do you. In READY TO DIE?\, Alison will walk you through all the basics of end-of-life planning that you can (and should!) do in advance for yourself and your loved ones\, from pre-planning a funeral to choosing who gets the power to pull the plug. By the end of this show\, you’ll go from “Ready to die?”\, question mark to “Ready to die!!!”\, enthusiastic triple exclamation point! \nAlison Zeidman (writer/performer) is an Emmy-nominated and WGA Award winning writer and comedian who got her start doing stand-up in Philadelphia and NYC. Her comedy is frequently described as “smart\,” but maybe it’s just the glasses. Alison has written for Archer\, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee (Supervising Writer) and Adam Ruins Everything (Head Writer & Co-Executive Producer)\, and her humor writing and essays have appeared in the New York Times and The Daily Beast. \nRyan Cunningham (director) is a queer writer/director and Emmy & Peabody award-winning producer in film\, television\, and theater. Directing credits: Samantha Bee presents Wits End (NYCF\, SXSW)\, Alan Cumming’s Club Cumming Presents a Queer Comedy Extravaganza! (Showtime)\, Ilana Glazer: The Planet is Burning (Amazon)\, Expecting Amy (HBO Max) TV producing credits: Broad City (Comedy Central)\, Search Party (TBS/HBO Max)\, Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central)\, The Last O.G. (TBS)\, and Ziwe (Showtime).
