SUMMARY:Decomposition Isn't A Dirty Word - Let's Talk About Green Burial
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided conversation on how burial in the United States drifted from our ancestral roots – and how green burial and conservation cemeteries can reconnect us with what’s natural\, human\, and quite literally in our DNA. Science doesn’t lie… our bodies are designed to decompose and return to the earth\, but green burial is limited in the US. \nHosted by Penny Waugh of The Death Network\, with panel guests Ed Bixby of The Global Green Burial Alliance and Jamie Phillips of Spirit Sanctuary Conservation Cemetery. Together\, we’ll unpack how we got here and why restoring time-honored burial practices matters for both our bodies and the planet. \nThis is a space to bring your questions – we honor open\, honest dialogue. With transparency and knowledge\, our hope is to help everyone understand their full range of options so end-of-life choices can be made with clarity and intention.

SUMMARY:Why California Needs a Conservation Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:🌿 Our Bodies Are Designed to Return to the Earth 🌿\nJoin our Zoom to learn what a Conservation Cemetery is… permanently protected natural land where burials restore habitat. We’ll take a deep dive into how a conservation cemetery differs from modern burial practices\, and how it compares to green burial. \nHere in California\, we’re a community that thrives outdoors! From beaches to deserts to mountains\, yet when it comes to our final rest\, our options are far removed from the natural rhythms that reflect our lifestyle. Modern burial practices – concrete vaults\, metal caskets\, and toxic embalming chemicals – lock our bodies away from the very process we were designed for: to decompose naturally and nourish the earth. Instead of restoring the land\, these practices harm it. \nIt doesn’t have to be this way.\nA Conservation Cemetery is more than green burial. It’s a way of restoring land\, protecting wildlife\, and ensuring our final act on earth is one of renewal\, not depletion.\nJoin us for this community gathering to: \nLearn how conservation cemeteries differ from standard and green cemeteries.\nExplore how our end-of-life choices can heal the planet.\nBe part of the growing movement urging California lawmakers to cut the red tape and make these options available here at home.\nLet’s be honest… there isn’t a lot of transparency within our current funeral industry\, we want to change that! Join us for real conversation about our common burial practices and gain an understanding about how harmful they are not only to our bodies\, but to the planet – and learn about greener options that may impact your end-of-life decision making. \nQuestions? hello@dodeathdifferent.com\nInstagram @thedeathnetwork\nWebsite www.TheDeathNetwork.com \nWe can’t wait to see you!

SUMMARY:Tour Our Lady of Almudena Cemetery (East Cemetery of Madrid)
DESCRIPTION:From @entretumbas (IG)\, in collaboration with Experimenta Madrid\, we organize these guided tours of the Almudena Cemetery\, whose real name is the Necropolis of the East of Madrid. It is the largest cemetery in Western Europe (120 hectares\, 120 times the size of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium!) During our tours\, we learn about the history of the cemetery\, so closely linked to that of our city. We visit the tombs of historical figures and other anonymous but highly interesting graves. We also learn funerary symbolism to understand the language of the cemetery. All with a gender perspective\, positive death\, and historical memory. \nTOUR TICKETS 29 JUNE: https://www.experimenta-madrid.com/tienda/Tour-Cementerio-de-la-Almudena-29-De-Junio-11-00-p643903765\nENTRETUMBAS: https://www.instagram.com/entretumbas/

SUMMARY:Tour Almudena Cemetery (East Cemetery of Madrid)

SUMMARY:Silent Book Club of Death NY
DESCRIPTION:Do you like book clubs\, but prefer to choose your own book? Want to reflect on your mortality in the company of polite bookworms? \nCome read and mingle with new\, bookish friends at Silent Book Club of Death! Bring whatever book you happen to be reading—related to the themes of death\, grief\, loss\, aging\, or mortality—to read in companionable silence\, then share about it with your fellow attendees. You can bring your own book\, or borrow one from our library. \nPrice: Free\, registration required at: https://www.green-wood.com/event/silent-book-club-of-death-3/ \nThere have been over a dozen Silent Book Club of Death chapters and pop up events globally. Green-Wood is proud to serve as one of the New York chapter venues. \nWe’ll be joined by the founder of the first chapter\, Catherine of Death Project Manager\, who will present on the importance of end-of-life planning\, share key tips to getting organized\, and opine on logistics as an act of love and care. She will answer questions on designing your own death education event and share work she’s done globally and multilingually to create death-aware programming. \nWe will mingle before setting the timer to read\, and once the hour’s up\, death doula and illustrator Lauren Seeley will lead a group discussion on these universal\, yet challenging topics. \nLauren Seeley is a death and grief doula for pets and humans. As a death educator\, she focuses on death literacy\, end-of-life preparation\, spirituality\, and energy and intuitive work in death and grief spaces. She is the sole facilitator of The Silent Book Club of Death’s NYC chapter and a curator of funerals\, altars and memorial spaces. Seeley resides in Brooklyn\, NY\, where she also works at a funeral home. \n*Participation in discussion is entirely optional—you can engage as much or as little as you feel comfortable. \nFree. Registration required. Please consider a $10 donation to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer more death education programs like this throughout the year.
