A Bold Theatrical Experiment in a Sacred Space Staged in the chapel’s historic rooms, In the Wake of Life invites audiences to move through a series of short plays, live vignettes, and interactive art installations. Each room becomes its own act — a poetic encounter with memory, mourning, and meaning. Licensed grief professionals are on hand to ensure that this deeply emotional experience remains grounded in compassion and care. “This is not grief as tragedy — it’s grief as transformation,” says playwright and producer Elizabeth Coplan, founder of Grief Dialogues. “By bringing theatre into a funeral home, we’re reclaiming the […]

Memento mori is a Latin phrase that means “remember you must die.” Death is an inevitable part of life, but society discourages us from confronting our own mortality. In this two-hour workshop, join trauma-informed meditation teacher Leah Raidt and death doula Becky Robison to acknowledge—and even welcome—death’s presence in our everyday lives. We’ll explore the individual dimensions of death by creating an altar of our own memento mori. We’ll examine the universal dimensions of death via meditation. And finally, we’ll hold a living funeral ritual where participants can write their own eulogies and learn about burial shrouding—including what it feels […]
Join Whidbey Island Death Midwife Venessa Greenheron and practicing medium Larry Johnson for an afternoon experience designed to open the doors to creating ritual for, and communication with, our departed loved ones. This event will feature an opening grounding meditation; a presentation and guided discussion about reconnecting back to ritual in our dying spaces and grieving processes; and a session with a medium working to communicate with the loved ones you are longing to hear from. (Please be advised, there is no guarantee of specific contact.)
Ars Moriendi is a collaboration by advocates for the dead: Mary Sweeney and Jen Den. This event will be held inside the chapel at Chicago's Graceland Cemetery and Arboretum. We will engage in thought-provoking discussions to connect with like-minded individuals who embrace the concept of death positivity. With Ars Moriendi we aim to break the taboo surrounding death and learn to appreciate the cycle of life in all its complexities, while taking an informative approach to alternative end-of-life options and how you might reconsider your demise. Whether you're curious about end-of-life planning, interested in alternative funeral practices, or simply want […]
