We loved collaborating with @justinsantora to design our new merch! This piece is meant to remind us that death can be much more gentle when it is embraced. Embracing death can mean meditating on your mortality, preparing for your own death, helping others plan for theirs, or talking just about it more often. Embracing death will ultimately help you understand what is (actually) important to you, and empower you to lead a more meaningful life.

Justin Santora also reflects on gentleness: "I was approached by TalkDeath and asked to draw a grim reaper reaching out to give a hug. Upon sketching this idea, it was suggested instead that I make Death holding a small, happy cat. I couldn’t resist seeing as how I adore cats. And the cat takes the edge off, I feel. We’re always told death is a natural part of life, yet we always seem so unprepared when faced with it in those we love." ❤️

📜 Emily Dickinson’s poetry often highlighted themes of death and loss. She experienced a great deal of what we might call today “death anxiety.” When Dickinson was only 14 years old, her second cousin and close friend Sophia Holland died from typhus in 1844. This loss helped shape her relationship with death and dying.

📜 Her poetry spoke to a wide variety of deaths, including crucifixion, drowning, hanging, suffocation, freezing, premature birth, shooting, stabbing, and death by guillotine. Art is one of the many ways humans express their complex relationship with and fear of death.

“Bog bodies” are corpses that have been natura

“Bog bodies” are corpses that have been naturally mummified in a peat bog, sometimes even keeping their organs intact. 🧠❤️ Bog bodies are found mostly in Northern Europe, and provide fascinating insights into the lives of people long ago. The Koelbjerg Man (first image) is the oldest so far, found in Denmark and dating to 8000 BCE. Most of the other bodies date to the Iron Age (~500 BCE to 100 CE) and have similar themes of violent deaths.

The peat itself is to thank for the unique preservation of these bodies. The presence of sphagnum moss, as it lives and dies, creates a dome that is very acidic. Once bodies enter this enclosed moss grave, they are preserved through a process similar to tanning leather. This creates the stereotypical yellow-silver color that is observed in many bog bodies, including the Lindow Man, found in England in the 1980s (➡️ to see).

Bog bodies were recently discussed on one of our favorite podcasts here at TalkDeath, @myfavoritemurder . In Episode 294 - Was It a Sandwich?, Georgia and Karen delve into the murder mystery surrounding the Lindow Woman, who was discovered in England in 1983. She was originally believed to be a murder victim Malika de Fernandez who investigators thought was killed by her husband, Peter Reyn-Bardt. With the body as evidence, Peter confessed. Following his confession, Detective Inspector George Abbott “has got enough to send Peter away, but he still sends this skull to the lab at Oxford University in October 1983 to take a closer look at it. And when the lab results come back several weeks later, investigators are stunned by what they learn. Radiocarbon dating shows that the skull could not have belonged to Malika de Fernandez because it’s more than 17 centuries old and it dates back to the year 250 AD.” 🤯

Happy Friday! For this week's euphemism we are exploring the origins of the phrase 🌼Pushing up Daisies.🌼 Euphemisms are often used to take the place of something untoward, uncomfortable, or taboo in some way. “Pushing up daisies'' is an almost cheery euphemism for death, and as such it is typically used in less formal settings or when referring to someone you don’t know personally.

The phrase itself likely alludes to the idea of one having been buried with daisies growing over the burial plot, but it’s origins are in literature and slang in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1838, The Clare Journal, and Ennis Advertiser of Ireland published the poem “TO MARY” that included a variation of the phrase in the second stanza. Over 50 years later, in 1915, letters from Lieutenant W.H. Roy included the phrase “push up the daisies” as a kind of British military slang. It also appeared in Wilfred Owen’s poem “A Terre.” Owen was an English poet and soldier and was known as a leading poet of the First World War. 🌍

In between the Irish and English versions, a similar phrase was used by Victor Hugo in Les Misérables. In French it is “être mort, cela s’appelle manger des pissenlits par la racine” or “to be dead, that is called to eat dandelions by the root.” 🌱
